Wessex Motor Club About Wessex Motor Club

Considering joining the motor club?

Wessex Motor Club is one of the many recreational clubs at the University of Southampton. The club is for people who are into cars and/or motorsport, as well as those with a health interest in good pubs, beer and food. This section of the site should give you some insight into what goes on.

What we do

We enjoy a wide range of activities in the Wessex Motor Club. These include:
  • Public Road Events
  • Karting
  • Autotests
  • Tabletop rallies
  • Skid pan training
  • Marshalling Road and Stage Rallies
  • Visits to Raceday events

Road Events

Every other Thursday during the Winter and Spring terms the Wessex Motor Club holds a Navigational Scatter or a 12-car Navigational Rally. A total of ten events for the rounds of the club's two championships, one of which is aimed at newcomers to motorsport and consequently only new members to the club are eligable.

All of our road events require both a driver and a navigator so you can take part even if you don't have a car (Contact us if you are a driver seeking a navigator or vice-versa and we'll see if we can put you in touch with someone suitable). Passengers are welcome in our Navigational Scatters so you can bring your friends along as well. It may also be possible to back-seat one of the more experienced crews during one of our events to find out if this is the sort of thing you would be interested in. Contact us if you are interested.

Because Wessex Motor Club is affiliated with the Motor Sports Association and the Association of Southern Motor Clubs all club members have the opportunity to enter national competitions such as the National Student Motor Sport Championship (NSMSC) which the club won in 1997 and 2003, and hosted in 1998.

Social Events

The club has a very active social calendar in addition to running our events - every week on which there isn't an event we go on a pub trip. We have visited most of the pubs in Hampshire and have produced our own Pub Guide.

Karting

Karting at the WMC consists of the UoS Karting Championship and two teams in the British University Karting Championship (BUKC).

The UoS Karting Championship consists of five rounds at different tracks across the region and is open to any member of the club. Each round is an individual race format, with the best four rounds counting towards the final championship positions.

The team for the BUKC is selected at the first round of the UoS Karting Championship, and consists of 14 drivers. There are four double-header events in the championship.
