Wessex Motor Club "Pairs" Point to Point Rally
The Hants & Berks Motor Club's 53rd Annual "Pairs" Point to Point.
The object of the "Pairs" is to do no more motoring than necessary, but still find the Final Control successfully. Two crews in two cars act as a team and aim to share the mileage equally.
Lunchtime and Final Control marshals are located by building up the map references of their locations. This is achieved either by visiting specified roadside points where "answers" can be found, or by guessing, or otherwise calculating the answer. Competitors may even decide that a particular figure in a control marshal’s map reference is not strictly necessary at all. For example: it should be perfectly possible to find a marshal (probably in a car) knowing only the kilometre square or perhaps three or four figures of the reference. After plotting the points and deciding which to visit, the team usually splits up to collect information, then meets again to discuss their answers and decide on the whereabouts of the Lunchtime Marshalled Controls. Both lunchtime marshals must be visited to obtain each half of the information required to find the Final Control. Both cars must arrive at the Final Control although not necessarily at the same time.
Those teams who, for whatever reason, cannot find a control may resort to "panic envelopes" that contain map references of the locations enabling them to continue with the event and still gain points for finding the Final Control.
Those competitors who successfully locate the Lunchtime Marshals and the Final Control without opening any "panic envelopes" gain maximum points. Penalties are incurred for miles covered and this resolves ties if more than one Pair gains the same score. Competitors aiming to equalise mileage between the two cars should remember that the organisers use corrected mileages to calculate the result.
Provisional results will be calculated and announced at a "tea venue" or public house near the Final Control.
